Where passion comes into building a successful company and career

Where passion comes into building a successful company and careerWhere passion comes into building a successful company and careerI used to think about passion a lot when I was starting my first business. It was a cause of doubt and frustration for me because what I was working toward didnt really involve any of my interests. I entered marketing because I was young, relieved to find out Iwas good at sohonigweinhing I could be interested in, and convinced that it was a just a temporary stop on the way to my ultimate passion.Thats the advice friends and society always gave You cant really be happy until your work matches your passion. Even as an entrepreneur who abandoned the traditional workforce, I think thats horrible advice. Now, that doesnt mean I dont believe in being passionate about what you do. As a matter of fact, Ive been spending the last year exploring how I can put what I know and what Ive built toward the work that really thrills me. Ive learned that you cant trust that y oull get to do what youre passionate about, but you can build your business so that youll always be ready when the chance to do what you really want comes along.Use up your mistakesA lot of people wait too long to start their first business - or never try at all - because they feel almost paralyzed by the idea that they shouldnt go for an opportunity unless its in a field theyre truly passionate about. Yet when that opportunity does come along, they dont have the necessary experience.I started out making next to nothingbut got to understand a little about the deep, ugly depths of the internet marketing world. I made mistakes that forced me to completely change everything I was doing several times. I dropped things I had been practicing for years to jump on opportunities, only because I choose to pursue what was in front of me instead of what I was passionate about.Even as I was floundering around, I was opening up to the world of digital commerce, and websites like oDesk (now Upwo rk), Fiverr and web marketing forums. It got me thinking about economies of scale and arbitrage. I didnt even know that arbitrage was before then, even though every business Ive built since then depends on it.Make connections in the spaces where you want to beNot being involved in the field youre passionate about doesnt mean you cant still participate in the conversation. Take advantage of the universal nature of social media to learn about the vendors and influencers who are in the space where you want to be.Before I warmed up to Twitter and other social platforms back in 2009/2010, I met people and started conversations in forums. Finding your footing with other people is the greatest way to find some common ground we bonded over the things we didnt understand and the problems we solved, and some of the first people I met are still the people I look to now. Even if what youre doing isnt what you want to do, make sure you never pass up the opportunity to make those connections.Buil d infrastructure youll need within your current businessDevelop a businessor a department within your business that can help you reach your dreams. For example, Ive put myself in a position where I promote things. And while I use my work to promote other people now, someday I can use it to promote something of my own. You dont have to choose promotion like I did you could build a foundation for your passion by having or building a reliable manufacturer or developer team.Theres more than one way to think ahead, too. I know that there will be a time when I will want to sell my business, and so I work hard to package it up in a way that will make it desirable for that future buyer. After all, another business I will want to build is right around the corner.Dont let doubt get in the waySeizing the best opportunities dont make you a sellout. Get out there, and when the chance to do what youre really passionate about comes along, youll be better able to handle it than anyone who waited.I havent had the chance to do what Im passionate about yet, but that temporary stop grew into something that supports many families, and that responsibility has profoundly changed my perspective. Ive also felt humbled in terms of what I thought my talents were, and where I truly fit best. Ive been able to build something only because I chose to seize the opportunities that came along, instead of waiting for a perfect one.Adam Steele is the owner of link-building agencyLoganix. 3 Signs You Talk Too Much in Meetings - The Muse

3 Signs You Talk Too Much in Meetings - The Muse3 Signs You Talk Too Much in MeetingsVery few people would say meetings are exciting, efficient, and overall, a great addition to a packed workday. Yet, theyre a necessary evil in the workplace. However, theres good berichterstattung And that is that you have the power to improve them by taking one small little action staying quiet. If you have a great idea, have a strong conviction, or are called upon to weigh in, then yes, speak up. But, if youre just talking to be heard and to be considered an active participant by your manager, then you have permission to zip your lips. How do you know when you should speak up and when you should sit silently? Here are three signs youre actually talking too much 1. You Repeat Your Co-workers Thoughts Without Adding AnythingIts great when your colleague says something you agree with. But, when you go on and on about how much you concur, it adds time to the meeting. Not only that, its a great way to a nnoy the rest of your co-workers, who probably have other important things they have to attend to.What to Do InsteadIm not suggesting you stop agreeing with your co-workers when they have a great idea. And if you have something in mind that you think would propel that thought forward, you should absolutely bring that up. However, if you just agree, feel free to acknowledge that and move on. Simply saying, Yes, thats a good point will go a long way in moving the conversation forward without adding unnecessary noise to the room. 2. You Relate Everything to Your Personal LifeIf this is the case for you, congrats. It sounds like youre part of a team youd spend time with out of the office, and that is something you should be really excited about. However, if youre using personal examples to illustrate every thought during a meeting, youre making it way too easy to get off-topic. And youre probably over-sharing.What to Do InsteadThe best meetings I attend typically reserve the first few m inutes for everyone to catch up. But once those few minutes are up, thats it. Everyones attention turns to the task at hand. Even if youre not leading the conversation, this is leise a good mental note to keep for yourself. Unless youre asked to provide a personal example, or you have one that illustrates the point so perfectly, save it for another time.3. You Start Debates That Arent Relevant to the ConversationIts frustrating when you and your team are trying to sort through the details of a tricky project, only to have someone derail the conversation by completely changing the subject. Although you probably have good intentions and usually arent trying to bring up a new topic entirely, its a time waster, especially because the team now likely has two unresolved issues to get through in a limited amount of time. What to Do InsteadThe solution here is simple- stay engaged in the debate everyone is having. Of course, bring up relevant tangents if it relates back to the meetings goal, but dont interrupt a conversation everyone else is having, just so you can bring up that great idea youve been thinking about forever. Waiting just a few minutes will not only help you be present in the current conversation, but it will help you avoid seeming like a me first teammate to the rest of your colleagues. The surprising truth is that the solution to appearing like a contributor during a meeting doesnt involve talking until youre blue in the face. Rather, it involves listening to what people are saying and doing your personal best to drive the meeting forward- whether thats with thoughtful comments or just an approving head nod. Heres the difference between leading and managing a team

Heres the difference between leading and managing a teamHeres the difference between leading and managing a teamWhats the difference between leading and managing a team?It takes great leaders and talent to grow a successful company. One of the best descriptions of a leader Ive heard is that leaders focus on vision and strategy, guiding and removing obstacles for their teams - something like a coach in sports.Managers typically focus mora on the execution piece, working in the business. By contrast, real leadership means providing a compelling vision and clear direction. Successful leaders clarify priorities and expectations, defining employee roles and ensuring that the processes and capacity required for them to execute are in place. The stance from which you lead makes a big difference in yur employees job satisfaction. To engage your workers today, focus mora on leading instead of managing. Ive found that most employees are looking for coaches who can help them develop and make th e most of their strengths, to add value for the company. This is especially true when it comes to Millennials, the largest generation in the workforce.Leading a productive team entails letting go of daily operations to focus on setting a clear strategy and vision - the why and what - and getting comfortable leaving your team to manage the how. This can be a serious challenge if youre accustomed to spending most of your time triaging problems, putting out fires and managing from a reactive standpoint.Managers execute leaders leadAs the CEO of a digital marketing agency, I used to review every monthly report for quality before it went out to our clients, which involved far too much managing time.Realizing it would not scale, I sat down one day and wrote a playbook on how to create these reports, trained the team and then let them loose. I still ask to be CCd on them, but now I can focus on coaching people on opportunities to improve, and they know they wont get my feedback before t hey send. This approach creates more accountability for others and less doing on my part. When I empowered the team to write those monthly reports, everyone saw better outcomes. Here are three more ways you can shift from day-to-day management to leadership.1) Establish core values- and follow them. While 80 percent of Fortune 100 companies talk about their core values publicly, according to one study, theirs are often hollow words that arent operationalized in any way. The magic of core values is that, when they are ingrained into employees daily work lives, they drive more autonomous decision-making.For example, one of our core values is embrace relationships, which empowers our managers to make financial decisions aligned with long-term outcomes, not short-term maximization of profits. Someone might say to me, I made this concession for one of our partners because it welches the right thing to do, rather than feel the need to ask for permission. To create the right conditions for su ccess, employees need to understand where the business is going and how they should behave, to lead by example. Your core values inform your company culture and including the team in creating those values can help workers feel more connected and empowered.2) Dont neglect your own professional developmentToo often, leaders assume responsibility for everyone on their teams but themselves. Although we all need to manage at times, leaders are usually proactive managers are reactive. If you want to be a great leader, set aside time for your own professional development.Join local and national professional organizations, such as Entrepreneurs Organization - a great resource for networking and leadership training - or attend conferences such as GrowCo to hear from other leaders who have found success.Look for groups that will challenge and support you in your professional development, beyond networking and handing out business cards. Seek out a successful coach or mentor and create a for mal board of advisors. Nothing is ever as easy as it looks, so lean on the support and experience of others to guide you, and learn from those who have done what you aim to do.And dont forget to transfer this focus on development to your team. GitHub, for example, allows each of its employees to attend one work-related conference a year and covers the travel costs if a teammate is invited to speak.3) Spread the love, or risk burnoutIf you try to do it all yourself, you will inevitably see diminishing returns on the time you invest. Successful leaders spend the majority of their time on tasks that utilize their own unique skills and abilities and leave the rest to others who are more competent in those areas.Try this exercise to figure out how to make that happenDetermine the maximum number of hours per week you can work and still stay balanced.Calculate (honestly) how much time it takes to do all your necessary tasks well. If the answer is more than 100 percent of your max hours, de legate.List every single thing you do in a day.Create two columns to sort that list In column 1, put every task you love to do and are great at column 2 is for everything else. Now, stop doing or delegate everything in column 2 that puts you over capacity. The great thing is, youll often discover that the duties you arent good at (or dont enjoy) align with the unique capabilities and favorite tasks of someone else on your team.Although it might seem impossible to let go of the daily tasks of managing the business, getting out of that mindset and focusing on how to be an inspirational leader is the best investment you can make - in both your quality of life and the ultimate success of your business. This post first appeared on Medium.

4 Ways to Be More Assertive at Work

4 Ways to Be More Assertive at Work4 Ways to Be More Assertive at Work Confidence and assertiveness dont come naturally to everyone, but if you tend to be timid or reserved in work situations, those qualities could end up hurting you. Not only might an excess of mildness give others the opportunity to take advantage of you, but by failing to appear self-assured, you could ruin your chances at getting otherwise well-deserved promotions . Thats why it pays to work on becoming mora assertive - and heres how.Being humble generally isnt a bad thing, but when you apologize in workplace situations where an Im sorry is by no means warranted, you discredit your own ideas and highlight your insecurities. Next time you disagree with someone or want to suggest doing things differently, dont preface your statements with Im sorry. Just say what you want to say, let your audience react, and respond as necessary.Imagine your colleague is suggesting a marketing strategy you firmly disagree with. Rather than saying, Im sorry, but I think we should go a different way, try Actually, heres why this other approach will be more beneficial. Your colleagues and managers are more likely to listen to your ideas if your language exudes confidence. You never what know seemingly minor nuances ofspeech can detract from an otherwise compelling argument. Whatever point youre trying to make, youll have a better shot if you stop diminishing your statements with words that make you appear to lack confidence in what youre saying.Imagine you have a great concept to share with your team at your weekly meeting. If you start with something along the lines of This is just an idea, but, youll end up selling that idea short. Rather, get up and say something like My idea is to do so and so. Heres why itll work. Its hard to confidently state your position when your data or knowledge set is fuzzy. So, if youre trying to make a case for something at work, be sure to have all the facts o n hand to back up your claims. While a more naturally assertive person might manage to argue a point forcefully without solid information to support it, if youre notlage the self-assured type, being confident in your research can make a big difference in how convincing you are. So if you expect to be put on the spot at an upcoming meeting , go in prepared. Some people shy away from strong language at work because they fear itll backfire. But the truth is, theres a big difference between being assertive and being aggressive. Whereas the former has a positive connotation, especially at the management level , the latter quality can damage careers. As long as you recognize that and dont cross the line, you have little to lose by being more assertive. In fact, your colleagues might come to respect you more once they see that youre capable of standing your ground. The more confident you appear at work, the more likely you are to succeed. Learning to assert yourself can not only help your c areer, but make your whole workplace experience more enjoyable.

3 Tips to Ace Your Upcoming Interview

3 Tips to Ace Your Upcoming Interview 3 Tips to Ace Your Upcoming Interview You did it! You landed the interview. That means your resume was a hit with the talent acquisition or HR team and you meet the minimum requirements for the job. But now you have the interview. That can be enough to send your nerves into a frenzy, but Resume Spice has you covered. As a leading career service for resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn, and career coaching, we’ve heard the best and worst interview stories and want to help you put your best foot forward. Below are 3 key items to keep in mind as you go on your interview. Do your research Hiring managers don’t expect you to know every single thing about the company, but at a minimum you should know what the company provides, if it’s made any major announcements recently, and how their services positively impact local and global communities. For example, if you’ve applied to a company that offers HR and benefits software solutions, you’ll want to look at their website, read testimonials, and get a sense of how these services are a benefit to the customer. Employers want to know not only that you’ve done your homework, but they also want to know that you see the value in what they provide. Try this exercise: as you’re researching the company, pick out two to three attributes about the company culture, services, or mission that you sincerely admire that appeals to your personal values. Ask questions This may seem obvious, but it’s so crucial that it bears repeating. Ask questions. Your questions should let the employer know that you’ve given meaningful thought to the position while also showcasing something that’s important to you. You could ask the employer what the biggest challenges of the moment are, and that would be okay. But take it a step further by asking “What are the biggest challenges for the department currently and how will those role solve for them?” Obviously, if this was something covered in the interview, you won’t ask it later or else it will look like you weren’t paying attention, but you get the idea. Remember that it’s a conversation We know that going on an interview for a job you really want or need can be nerve-racking, but just try to remember that an interview is really just a conversation. It may be a more formal conversation than you’d have with your buds, but it’s a conversation nonetheless. Keeping that in mind will help ease your nerves so that you can put your best foot forward and land the job. And remember that many hiring managers aren’t looking for perfect answers. They’re looking for indications about how you behave under pressure and the way you approach the interview will tell them a lot. Medical Records Release FAQ - United States

Medical Records Release FAQ - United States Medical Records Release FAQ - United States General What is a Medical Records Release? A Medical Records Release Form (also known as a Medical Information Release Form) is a form used to request that a health care provider (physician, dentist, hospital, chiropractor, psychiatrist, etc.) release a patient's medical records, either to the patient, a third party (such as an employer, insurance company, etc.) or both. LawDepot's Medical Records Release can also be used to request that the errors in a patient's medical records be corrected. Why should I use LawDepot's Medical Records Release? LawDepot's Medical Records Release Form is drafted to meet or exceed standards required by the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act, its associated regulations, notes and material published by the US Department of Health and Human Services, and State laws for the release of confidential patient information upon the patients (or legal representative's) written request. Additionally, LawDepot's Medical Records Release makes requesting the release of your medical records quick and easy. The automated form allows you to request information to be sent to multiple individuals and organizations at once. So, for example, you could request three copies of your medical records - a copy for yourself, a copy for a potential employer, and a copy for your insurance company - with one form. The form also allows you to request that your medical records be released by multiple organizations at the same time. For example, you could create one Medical Records Release form and send it to both your dentist and your physician. Can I use the Medical Records Release to correct information in my medical file? Yes, LawDepot's Medical Records Release allows you to request corrections and amendments to existing Medical Records. What information can be found in my medical records? When you receive treatment from a health professional, such as a nurse, physician, dentist, or psychiatrist, medical records are drafted and stored in your file. Your medical records may include information about: Your medical history Your family's medical history Treatments you have received Results from laboratory tests Results from genetic testing Medications you have been prescribed Results of operations and other medical procedures Information you have provided on applications for life insurance or applications for disability Information about your lifestyle, including: Smoking Recreational drug use High-risk activities With so much sensitive information available, it is vital that you take every step possible to protect the privacy and confidentiality of your medical records. Will I have to pay for my medical records? You may be charged for the costs associated with retrieving, copying, and sending medical records. The fee for this service will depend on the size of your file and the number of copies you are requesting. In most cases, the amount charged must be reasonable, but different health care providers may charge different amounts for copying the same information. If you absolutely cannot afford to pay for your medical records, you can try submitting a note to your health care provider stating that you cannot afford to pay for the charges. In these cases, the health care provider might provide you with copies of your medical records free of charge. The PatientWho is the Patient? The patient is the individual who is seeking to have Medical Records released. What is a Minor?A minor is a person who is under the age of majority in their residing state. For example, in the state of Montana, the age of majority is 18, so all individuals under the age of 18 are considered minors. If the patient is a minor, a parent or guardian will have to request the release of the patient's medical records. What is a Dependent Adult?A dependent adult is an adult who is dependent on one or more people for support or care. A dependent adult could be under another's care by way of a medical directive, court order, power of attorney, etc. Corrections to Existing Medical RecordsWhy is it important to correct errors contained in my medical records?Errors in your medical records can lead to serious problems, including but not limited to the following: Errors in diagnosisIf current or past symptoms and/or treatments are recorded incorrectly, the incorrect information can cause errors in future diagnoses. Errors in treatmentErrors in treatment, caused by errors in a patient's medical records, are not uncommon. For example, a patient's medical records could fail to state that the patient is allergic to a common treatment, or the records might incorrectly list a medication that the patient takes, which could lead to two conflicting medications being administered at the same time. Also, if errors in your medical records caused an incorrect diagnosis, that incorrect diagnosis can lead to errors in treatment. Problems with insuranceApplying for Insurance: Errors in your medical records can adversely affect you when you apply for health insurance or life insurance. An error can cause an insurance company to believe that you are sicker than you actually are. This can lead to increased premiums or, in extreme cases, refusal of coverage. As such, it is always a good idea to review your medical records for errors before you apply for insurance. Collecting Insurance: Errors in your medical records might also affect your ability to collect from your health insurance provider. For example, a miscoded diagnoses could cause your insurance company to refuse payment for your treatment. What information in my medical records should I check for errors?Although the best practice is to review all of the information in your medical records for errors, you should pay special attention to the following: Doctor's Notes Records from testing centers, hospitals, clinics, and other facilities that the patient has visited. Insurance billing and codes Results from medical tests How should I list corrections that are required? When listing corrections that are required, you should do so in complete sentences, using as much detail as necessary to identify the corrections that need to be made. You should list pages, dates, doctors' names, and any other information that can be used to correctly identify the error(s) that should be corrected. If more than one correction is required, you may wish to letter the corrections, as illustrated in the following example. Incorrect: Change Tylnol 3 to say Tylenol 3. Change my phone number from 555-1234 to 555-1324. Correct: a. On page 6 of Dr. Smiths Chart Notes, which are dated November 22, 2002, the prescription noted is incorrectly labeled as Tylnol 3 instead of Tylenol 3. b. Under the patient contact information listed on page 1 of Dr. Smith's Chart Notes, which are dated June 4 2004, the patient's phone number is incorrectly listed as 555-1234. The patient's phone number is actually 555-1324.

Here is The Resume of Barack Obama. Would you hire him

Here is The Resume of Barack Obama. Would you hire him Here is The Resume of Barack Obama. Would you hire him Barack Obama is soon to be out of office and he already seems a bit unsure as for what job should he take next.  Weve decided to help soon-to-be-unemployed president Obama with his new resume. Obama is not going to have it easy. Even though the economy is steadily improving, there are still many people out there who are struggling to find employment. In his 55 years, Obama’s going to have a tough time starting over. Especially when you consider that for the past couple of years he’s been working a dead-end job where he received no promotions whatsoever. Finally, he openly admitted he’s going to spend a lot of time “thinking” before moving on to a next job. This is going to leave him with a huge gap on his resume. Advanced age, no career progress in almost a decade, and a gap on his resume - hiring managers don’t look favourably on any of these. On a more serious note, there’s no doubt that Obama has accomplished several impressive feats during his career as president. In spite of fierce opposition from the Republican party, he was able to pass health care reform. Under his administration, the US recovered from one of the worst recessions since the 1930s. He brokered international deals that slow the impact of climate change. He got elected twice in a row. Obama was both the first African-American US president and the first sitting president to publicly support same-sex marriage. According to many, he was one of the coolest US presidents ever. In any case, it’s not our place to judge his past accomplishments or legacy. Barack Obama is soon to be unemployed and after 8 years in office, his job hunting skills must have gotten quite rusty. In , we deal in cool resumes and we’ve decided to help him create his. The Infographic Resume of Barack Obama. Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments!

Are resumes becoming obsolete This CEO thinks so

Are resumes becoming obsolete This CEO thinks so Are resumes becoming obsolete This CEO thinks so Even with new innovations like  LinkedIn, website portfolios and unique  interview questions, one part of the job application process has always remained the same - the  resume.   It’s a standard document that highlights your recent and relevant experiences. It’s your one-sheet; your main rationale for getting this job.But what if it didn’t have to be? According to top CEOs, resumes aren’t the best identifier for good hires. Jeff Weiner, CEO of  LinkedIn, believes that the key to finding strong talent isn’t looking at more resumes - it’s about looking in non-traditional places.Speaking at the ASU GSV Summit, Weiner acknowledged that companies need to update the way they’ve traditionally hired people. “There are qualities… that have a tendency to be completely overlooked when people are sifting through resumes or LinkedIn profiles,” Weiner said. “And yet, increasingly, we find that these are the kinds of people that make the biggest difference within our organi zation.”For individuals who have many skills but few experiences, resumes aren’t an accurate summary of their potential. Resumes do a good job providing a timeline of your work history, but they focus on aspects that don’t necessarily apply to the work you’ll be doing with a specific company.Laszlo Bock,  Google’s former head of  human resources, told  The New York Times  that employees without any college education are just as (if not more) valuable as those with a traditional degree.“After two or three years, your ability to perform… is completely unrelated to how you performed when you were in school,” Bock said. “The skills you required in college are very different. You’re also fundamentally a different person. You learn and grow, you think about things differently.“Google famously used to ask everyone for a transcript and G.P.A.’s and test scores, but we don’t anymore,” Bock said. “We found that they don’t predict anything.”Weiner agrees. It†™s one of the reasons he supports LinkedIn’s internship program, REACH, and its focus on a new kind of recruiting.“Yes, degrees from specific schools can lead us to finding incredible talent. But it’s not the exclusionary domain of incredible talent,” Weiner said. “This [program] is trying to get away from this idea that everyone on the engineering team, everyone we recruit, has to have come from a specific school and has to have a specific kind of degree.”Unlike a traditional internship program,  REACH  is an apprenticeship. For six months, participants work full-time as a member of LinkedIn’s functional engineering team to learn from managers. By proving their skills at the end of the program, successful apprentices have the potential to be offered a full-time software engineering role.“We’re looking for folks with a growth mindset,” Weiner said. “We’re looking for people with the dedication, with the work ethic. We want to give them a shot. And what we’r e finding is, these people are… incredibly talented, and they need a chance.”Bock agrees. “You want people who like figuring stuff out where there is no obvious answer.”So, while this does mean that your resume has less of an impact on your overall hiring, it means that within your next job interview - you should focus on how you can put your hard-earned skills to use for the company. Keep the focus on your skills and you’ll go far.“There’s just so much talent to be had if people are open to finding this talent in different places,” Weiner said. This post originally appeared on Fairygodboss.

The Best Way to Get Into Medical School

The Best Way to Get Into Medical School The Best Way to Get Into Medical School Do you think you might want to go to medical school in the future? Are you wondering what you can do now to prepare and enhance your chances of gaining admission? Its never too early to start thinking about your career goals and planning how to achieve them. When to Start Career Research The high school years are the perfect time to begin exploring your interests and preparing your background. Take advantage of the resources available at your school and in your local community to begin  your  preparation  for a medical career. Why is  it  important to start early if you want to become a doctor? First, you will need to attend a college that will prepare you for medical school. This means a competitive college or university that offers the science classes you will need  for acceptance into medical school. You will need to take the appropriate classes in high school to  increase  your chances of being accepted at the undergraduate  institution  of your choice. In addition to your coursework, undergraduate admissions and medical school admissions will consider your extracurricular activities. The more relevant experience you have, the stronger a candidate you will be. That experience will also help you figure out if you are sure that you are interested in a medical career because you will be exposed to what its really like to be a doctor. Tips for High School Students Who Want to Be Doctors Here are some tips for high school students (and their parents) who are interested in becoming doctors: Visit your high school guidance office and ask about resources for  learning  about medical careers. Tap online resources  such  as  the  Occupational Outlook Handbook.Meet with medical practitioners in your area and through family  and  friends for  informational interviews. Ask them what it takes to be a doctor and inquire about the challenges and satisfactions involved with their work.Ask any contact with whom you  have  developed  a nice rapport if you can  shadow  them as they  go  through their  day. These observations will help you evaluate your comfort with medical environments and interventions. Consider volunteering at a local hospital, nursing home, or other health-care establishment. Medical schools look for proof of your exposure to medical settings and commitment to serving others.Find a part-time or summer job at a health-care facility. The more experience you gain, the better equipped you will be for medical school.Once you are 16 (age varies by state),  you  may  want to complete training during the summer to be a  certified Nurse Assistant  (CNA). Training takes anywhere from three  weeks to three months. Once you have your certificate, you can earn good money and gain valuable experience prior to medical school. Another route to consider is completing  training as an  emergency Medical Technician  (EMT) once you are 18. Basic level EMTs can complete training in as little as two to three  months,  and  they  play an important role  by  intervening in emergency medical situations.Develop a strong background in science and prove that you can handle rigorous courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and math. Take AP and advanced courses as often as possible and maintain high grades. Meet with your guidance counselor to plot the appropriate high school courses. Reach out to local medical researchers  and volunteer to help them carry out their research activities. Ask your science teachers, family physician,  and other contacts  to  recommend researchers. Medicine is a research-based discipline,  and schools will value evidence that you are research oriented.Take on leadership roles at your school and in your community. Prove that you can motivate your peers to action,  particularly in ways that benefit your school or community.Make sure that you conduct your life in accordance with the highest ethical standards. Medical schools and the medical profession demand that candidates conform to very high ethical standards. Carefully research four-year colleges in collaboration with your high school guidance counselor. Identify highly regarded schools and find out how many  of  their  grads are accepted to medical school. By starting early and taking some of these steps, you will confirm your interest in medicine and prove to medical schools that you have the right stuff to succeed! Review the Pre-Med Skills You Will Need Review a list of skills you will acquire if you decide to major in medicine. How to Pitch Editors With Story Ideas to Get Assignments

How to Pitch Editors With Story Ideas to Get Assignments How to Pitch Editors With Story Ideas to Get Assignments A pitch is a writers description of a potential story (and  why it should matter)  to an editor. A pitch can be delivered verbally- if youre on staff pitching to your editor- or sent via email. A pitch essentially makes the case for doing a certain story at a certain point in time, and most importantly, why youre the best person to write it. Writing a Successful Pitch Letter or Email And a good pitch letter should quickly and succinctly do a few things: Introduce the authorSummarize the story the author wants to writeExplain why that story matters You first have to be able to sell an article or an idea for an article before writing and being paid for it. Even if you have never worked with a particular  editor before, your pitch should be able to make a lasting impression, so that you stand out from the crowd and have a better chance of being given the assignment. How Do You Approach Editors With a Story Idea? Since editors often work with large numbers of writers, publicists, advertisers, and readers, unless you already work for the editor or the editor knows you personally, it can be difficult to pitch a story to them. Its not impossible, but editors get an enormous amount of email, so you have limited opportunity to get their attention. If someone you know can make an introduction to the editor you want to pitch, dont be shy about asking. If you dont hear back from the editor youve pitched within a week, do follow up. If you still dont hear back, chances are good theyre not interested (or dont have time to work with you). You should feel free to pitch that idea elsewhere if you dont get a response from your first attempt.   Do Your ResearchBeforeYouPitch Some publications have specific guidelines about how to pitch them and when, so take a careful look at their website before you fire off that email. Its also good to know whether a publication accepts unsolicited pitches (many dont).   One excellent resource that contains this information is Writers Market, a guide published annually by Writers Digest. It contains information about hundreds of newspapers, magazines and other publications such as how much they pay, how they prefer to receive queries (another word for pitches) and contact information. Its also a good idea to be familiar with a given publications editorial calendar, usually available on their website (sometimes under the advertising section). Do they have a wedding section every May? Dont wait until  April 15 to pitch that idea about wedding cakes. And do your research: Make sure your great idea hasnt already been covered by the publication youre pitching.   Pitch Your Idea to the Right Person There are few things more annoying to an editor than being pitched a story idea that is outside their scope. Dont pitch the sports editor with your great business story. Check the publications masthead (the editors and their titles) to make sure youre approaching the right person. And make doubly sure you spell the editors name correctly. Nothing gets a pitch binned faster than misspelling the receiving editors name.   Pitch With a Formula in Mind A well-written pitch should  be clear and concise. Heres what you want to include: First, introduce the story idea and define  the angle. Explain what you want to write about and explain your point of view and argument. Explain why your idea is timely, important, different and/or of interest to the particular audience and readers of the publication you are approaching. Be clear about why youre the person to write the piece. Expertise in a given area or an interest in a topic are fine reasons. A personal relationship that may signal a conflict of interest is not. Give a realistic estimate of the deadline for your piece.  Include your contact information, both phone number and email address. Some writers attach writing samples to demonstrate experience, although many editors wont click on attachments from people they dont know. Its better to include a link to your personal blog or website that will have examples of your work.

Build Your Case for the Senior Executive Service (SES)

Build Your Case for the Senior Executive Service (SES) Build Your Case for the Senior Executive Service (SES) Build Your Case for the Senior Executive Service (SES) Baltimore, MD (PRWEB) November 28, 2011 Like in show business, in government there are really no “overnight successes.” Instead there are the sometimes unnoticed years of preparation, as you head toward future work roles. This concept was illustrated in Rudolph Giuliani’s bestseller Leadership, in which the former New York Mayor states that he didn’t simply become a great leader on 9-11. Instead he purposefully took on challenges throughout his entire career. In a similar way, you want to aim for ongoing career development. And it’s important to look at how you’re doing so far â€" especially if you hope to enter the government’s Senior Executive Service (SES) within five years. The practical reason for this self-assessment is that you’re going to have to prove your SES worthiness with specified types of real-life examples. And the method for proving your leadership readiness are narratives called Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs). “If you’re not aware of the ECQs, as what you must achieve, you may not be ready for the SES,” cautioned Kathryn Troutman, who authored The New SES Application with Diane Hudson Burns. “You must gain specific experience and qualifications, plus get them down on paper.” Who should consider grooming themselves for the SES? Federal employees eligible to apply for the government’s SES-track Career Development Programs (CPDs) come from the manager level, GS-14. Others with a five-year plan of their own could begin around GS-12/13. Applicants for Career Development Programs, offered periodically at different agencies, submit ECQs when applying for a CDP and at the end of their program. All SES applicants must write and submit the ECQ narratives or incorporate them into the new five-page SES resume-based format when responding to a SES vacancy announcement. Troutman’s advice to all applicants is to start writing the ECQs right away. “This way, you can begin to look at what’s missing according to the Office of Personnel Management’s required 28 leadership competencies,” advised Troutman. “One of the best ways to learn about ECQ development is to take a class  on how to write the ECQs in the correct format.” The New SES Application provides a step-by-step process for writing both the ECQs and the five-page SES resume and is used as the curriculum at Troutman’s Federal Career Training Institute for the hands-on January 17-18 workshop in Maryland, focused on writing the ECQs and the five-page SES resume. Attendees also learn to articulate their leadership qualifications for job interviews and networking. In a recent interview, Troutman offered basic tips for thinking about your leadership qualifications and preparing to write the five ECQs. ECQ #1 â€" Leading Change: This competency is about leading change, not just implementing it, Troutman explained. It looks for creativity and strategic thinking. “Ask yourself, ‘When did I lead change? Why was change needed? What was my role in the change?’” she recommended. “This is not about what your department did, but what you did to lead change.” ECQ #2 â€" Leading People: The second ECQ centers on the ability to lead people toward meeting the organization’s vision. “Your example might address conflict management, leveraging diversity, or implementing career development,” Troutman said. “Ask yourself, ‘Who did I lead? What was going on with them? What were the challenges of their jobs?’” ECQ #3 â€" Results Driven: “This is a Type A competency,” Troutman noted. “The third ECQ relates to action, staying on task, following up, and being driven by the desired results. Top leaders are very results driven, like Giuliani was as New York’s mayor.” ECQ #4 â€" Business Acumen: To tackle this qualification, you need three “heads” â€" oriented to finance, human capital and technology. “This can be the toughest ECQ,” Troutman observed. “Government people tend to think about programs and policies, rather than business. But think of contracts, procurements and budgets for finance, restructuring, recruitment and training for people, and security, IT security and automation for technology.” ECQ #5 â€" Building Coalitions: The fifth ECQ is about partnering, political savvy, influencing and negotiating. Troutman said, “Ask yourself, ‘How well do I partner with other organizations to achieve goals? How well do I communicate with them? How well do I work with others?” Lack of partnering was behind the failure to respond quickly to the Katrina disaster, Troutman noted. Now emergency management has tremendous partnerships between different government levels. Troutman’s book The New SES Application is the latest publication from her award-winning Federal Career Publishers. Both the publishing company and training institute grew from her resume-writing firm, The Resume Place, which specializes in federal careers. The Federal Career Training Institute is offering an early bird discount[RQ1] to those who register for the January SES Writing Course before December 22. The SES ECQ Writing Workshop includes two- days of hand-on, interactive developmental writing delivered by a team of top trainers. Each participant will also receive five additional hours of editorial service to help finalize the five-page SES resume. “Many people struggle with writing or talking about their leadership accomplishments,” remarked Troutman. “The January workshop will inspire participants to remember and write their leadership accomplishments, while sharing and brainstorming with colleagues.” The process of creating ECQs is very past-performance oriented.   Do the groundwork now so you can later prove you’re SES ready.
